looking for Psy kick drum samples!

topic posted Thu, March 20, 2008 - 1:01 AM by  Zandar
I am looking for ways to get that nice "snappy" Darkpsy kick sound using my gear, or perhaps a spot for samples- any suggestions out there?

To make a good kick (darkpsy or whatever) you need to make sure that you have something that can make a really tight envelope... I prefer samples, but there are a couple vstis that I've used specifically for kick drums... I recommend bassism or there's a psykick vsti floating around on Isratrance somewhere...

Of all the kick drum samples I've gotten from other artists, I tend to use the ones more associated with full on artists... I am not the biggest fan of clicky kicks.. I like nice round, but punchy kicks that are almost techno kicks... :) Who knows, if you ask real nice, I might just send you the one I'm using.

Thx, Mubali! will do so! I have been trying to get my rack attack to poop out the sacred beat, but i think a tutorial might really help out.....! will also check out bassism as well....

And, I would also be WAY interested in a sample or two if you are offering .. i would greatly appreciate that too...
        love your work, namaste

            thx again-Z

Here you go... I've been using this kick for a while... I like it...

Ask me in person where I got it from

I was *really* surprised my how much mileage I got out of using some eq on my kick (or...you know, everything).

Ocelot has a tutorial that's not super helpful IMO, but he does mention the way he likes to eq by putting a high shelf on and knocking the "beater" of the kick by even as much as -10dB. I haven't found the need to cut by more than 5dB, but I like snappy kicks.

Using a shelf eq like this and finding the right frequency for it can let you put more or less click and snap in the kick without stealing power from the low end.

Also, my favorite tip I picked up from an isratrance thread is to crank the $&*% out of your headphones or speakers (if you have a sub...I don't) and listen really hard for the sub-bass frequencies. Move a high pass down slowly from 50hz until you can't hear an audible difference. In the end, you have a kick that has nice sub-bass but only as much as is needed for effect and no extra super low (20-30hz) mud. Having too much sound down that low will make your kick sound softer because all the headroom is taken up by large amplitudes in this range which you don't really hear so much as feel. Having too much of this is no good.

Also, try punching some holes for your bass synth to shine through. Cleans and tightens up the whole boom and thunder of the track.

Basically, careful eq is magical in my experience.

I kinda disagree with the whole low cut at 50hz thing... from my experience cutting at that high of a hz really makes the kick sound thin and boxy. I can understand if you're planning on having the bass note on the kick without using sidechain compression, but personally for me a kick need to KICK. Also if you're having mud issues, you really need to check your bass. See what's going on there and also see if your kick drum has a tail that's extending into the first note or two of your bass. Also if you want more snap in your kick, create a little bump of 2-3 db at around the 2000hz range. Also cranking your headphones like that is a really good way to get tinnitus. If you really want to hear what's going on that far into your sub range, get a sub or bounce a sample to listen to in a good car stereo. Also, you can just take a look at a frequency analyzer too, and that would be the least painful thing to do.

Also, try using multiband compression instead of eqing, I tend to like the result better and it keeps some of the original sonic integrity of whatever you're using it on.

I truly appreciate ALL the input on I have received on this. I can see that the "American idol" hit might come along a bit later than I thought! (kidding. )And, M! When U make it up this way for the show, the brau is on me....!

Mubali, I think you misunderstood a little bit. I was pointing to 50hz as a starting point from which I sweep down to find the point at which you don't get new, audible sub energy by going lower. The ending point is more like 30hz. Does this sound reasonable?

Also, the waves frequency analyzer gives lower resolution at 96khz than it does at 44 and I find that I can't actually distinguish 60hz from 30hz (it's just one big peak). Can you recommend a good analyzer?

I guess so, but I honestly low cut my kick at 20... Whatever works for you I guess. The times I've done it at 30 or higher, I couldn't actually hear the loss, but I did feel it on my sub. but in the end the mud isn't as much in the kick as it's in the bass...

The waves analyzer can read up to 10hz if you set it properly. but also using ozone might help you more. either that or this....

there is also some nice banks of samples on the isratrance producers part of the forum, i would post them but I'm having problems with that machine at the moment.
One thing I need to start doing is re-sampling the kick once I get something I like with eq/compression, it kind of makes me sick to think of the lovely little personal library I would have if I had started doing this years ago.
another idea that might be worth exploring is get a ton of different kicks with different characteristics, layer them all into a single hit, compress the shit out of it until you have a nice big ol chunk of kick frequencies and then use that as the grandfather sample to mold with eq/compression. I think part of the problem with vsti type kick synths for psy is that we are doing a more surgical form of subtractive synthesis with the eq filters.
