na, been there done that. New beats please! that mans got a collection of new stuff that is most likely unfathomable. miss the new stuff and redo the old stuff i think is a bad trade off when dancing about Goa Gill.

I think we should petition to have Gil play a 24 hour HIP-HOP set, or gangsta rap... i hear he has quite the collection from the OC in the hizzouse, er something...

let him play as he is, I still haven't been...but as a dj, let him play. that's what he does. apparently he blows you mind regardless. he has a good track selection ALWAYS.

    Totally disagree with this.

Who is anyone to tell or "ask" an artist what to play. If this is something that he wanted to do then I am sure he would arrange something like this.

why not just spin goa yourself?

Well it's like if you want to hear goa at a event than go to an event where the artist still plays goa. I am no way saying I don't like goa because I do. I actually went to Hallucinogen/schpongle event last summer. I just think it's bs to have people sign a petition asking an artist who has moved on and no longer plays that to do so. Let an artist be an artist ya know. :)

re: let an artist be an artist
normally i'd agree, but then i think about it.
this isnt a request for a producer to create goa
and if anything gil's events are more family gatherings/trance showcases
for new badass tracks than artistic endeavors even by his own standards...
no turntablism, no dedicated beatmatching, no flawless mixing, not much storytelling.
i mean ultimately, dj means disc jockey, and disc jockeys are known to play requests...
    even the godfather knows that.

either way its in his hands.

by the way, i don't miss goa at all.
loved it at the time, but looking back at it is like watching night court
and trying to understand what the fuck was so funny about it when i
    was 11. oh yeah. i was 11.

There's a difference between your mobile disc jockey playing top 40 at some meat market club, and the type of events that the psychedelic trance scene is about as well as the gil events. Also, Gil is a producer and he's always been about showcase the up and coming and new breed of music he considers psychedelic. He was doing that back in the day when he played goa and he's doing in now with all the other stuff he plays. If you really want a goa stompathon, go get some goa and play it.... Personally, I'm not that big of a fan of goa, and I appreciate the styles of the new stuff. Some of what gil plays isn't my cup of tea, but I'd rather hear stuff that challenges me to understand it rather than hearing stuff that I've already heard and not into that much.

        hahahaha

i like the fierce opposition to this request.
ill admit i thought it was shitty the first time
i read it, but cmon. look at the guys pic!

gil's definitely not your average psy dj.
even tho goa tends to make my anus tighten
the wrong way, it'd be fuckin highlarious if
he said: sounds good! lets do it!
and then on the day of, all the party goers
except the few who actually signed the petition
or those still devoted to goa, stared in fear and
loathing as gil played goa classics from 1994.

is the request wack? of course.
is it outside the realms of a possible reality? no
it would also be hilarious if like the whole of the psy scene
signed the petition and gil said: fuck you guys! and played
        whatever he wanted.
psy faux pas crack me the fuck up.

re: no turntablism, no dedicated beatmatching, no flawless mixing, not much storytelling

well to start off, all of those things you listed came -chronologically- AFTER gil started playing music for hours on end. and anyone who has heard him play can atest to his storytelling. thats all he DOES is tell stories with the sound. the simple fact that when you want to ask him to stop you have to tell him way in advance (because his track queue list/stack of DAT tapes is two hours long) says something about what he does up there.
ON THE FLY no less. no presequenced tracks, no setlist, no NOTHING.. just the music. granted he may know what goes together like any other DJ but it if you have heard him play on more than one occasion at more than one location you can immediately notice he isnt just playing one track after another for a day or so.. every time i have heard him play he plays with a different "intent". i dont know if it is because of the new music he has and he is merely speaking from the new point in the evolution of that music or if he is just meaning to say something different - either way it is not as if he is up there doing the same shit from set to set.

i would love to see him agree to it and play his normal stuff and just MESS everyone up apocalyptic style. it is likely scare some away and for this reason i am sure he wont do it but some people just need a wake up call.
you wouldnt revert back to acting like you did when you were a little kid or think with the wisdom you possesed as an adolescent so deductively it wouldnt seem rational to suddenly reject all the current music and stop that path of evolution for the sake of sentimentality.

Or you could objectively look at reality and the fact that Goa Gil is just a shitty DJ, banking off the fact that a good % of people that get into the pyschedelic scene suffer from "guru-itis". Exchanged traditional religious worship for the worship of some other dude that knows the "truth". Since Leary is long dead, Mckenna long dead, no one left to focus on besides a fake shivaite hippy playing quasi gabber and being hypnotized into some "profound experience". While I can kind of respect the subjective mythology that Goa Gil has created, its so cheesy I would seriously rather attend some wacked out christian fundy church event. At least that would come off as less of a fraud.

I believe objectivity works best with facts.. goa gil is a dj.. leary is dead.. mckenna is dead.. and assuming you are being honest, you would rather go to a xtian event, than somewhere that gil is playing.. the rest of it sure struck me as subjective.. :)
